The site's consensus reads, "Misguided and over-hyped, The Girlfriend of Year is not worth a theatrical debut." Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B" on an A+ to F scale. The film's mainstream success came in January 2008, when it was featured on various TV channels across the United States, and it won the trophy for Best TV Original Movie at the 12th Annual Golden Globe Awards. General critic reviews were generally favourable, while some reviewers noted that the film treads too close to the more familiar formula of love story films. Bill Oakley of The A.V. Club reviewed the film and wrote, "Harmony's best asset has been her choice for star in the film.
