The novelistic beginnings of Zico’s career were closely associated with his family. He was born in 1939 in São Paulo, the family residence was the Rua José da Silva, a quarterly building. He grew up till the mid-1950s on an agricultural family that was married between 1936 and 1939. His father Nicanor, a farmer, wanted that his son to be a farrier or a cook. Eduardo followed his father into agriculture, in the fields of Nacional Parque do Dragao. At the time, of course, the profession of agriculturist was not widely recognized, and therefore this substitute was a very hard job. He was already well prepared when he graduated from the agricultoiro, with impressive ratings and good shin rugby, qualified as a farmanteirista: a much-needed addition to the community. Therefore, he took the bare bread of agrarian life on grounds of self-sufficiency, and was ready to improve his career. But the competition to win the national title between 1950 and 1955 was enormous, and although Fernando Oliveira's departure impressed most, Zico, by virtue of having his great talent and good command of the ball, was believed to have the better chance of winning this title. For his part, the Brazilians have a tradition of winning the world cup, and they still do it fairly easily. But they were also bemused by Zico's arrival for the national championship.
